“American culture is probably the hardest place in the world to learn to pray. We are so busy that when we slow down to pray, we find it uncomfortable…When are aren’t working, we are used to being entertained. Television, the Internet, video games, and cell phones make free time as busy as work…Everywhere we go we hear background noise…Even church services can have that same restless energy. There is little space to be still before God. We want our money’s worth, so something should always be happening. We are uncomfortable with silence. in shambles.

“Silence promotes the presence of God, prevents many harsh and proud words, and suppresses many dangers in the way of ridiculing or harshly judging our neighbors… If you are faithful in keeping silence when it is not necessary to speak, God will preserve you from evil when it is right for you to talk.”

~ Francois Fenelon (1651-1715), Selections from Fenelon
