Revival Momentum Is Growing!

Author: OneCry Team Date: June 24, 2014

Last week, we read how the newly elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Ronnie Floyd, is calling all those associated with his large denomination to seek, through prayer and action, another Great Awakening in America.

Today, we want to highlight two other calls for extraordinary prayer for revival and spiritual awakening from ministries we partner with.

Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., has their annual Call2Fall event. As they describe it on their website, “The Call2Fall is nothing fancy. No slick program. No big production. Just setting aside a definite time during worship on June 29, 2014, when you call your people to get on their knees and faces before the Lord in repentant prayer for God to reshape our lives and renew our land.”

The other call to prayer comes from Billy Graham’s daughter, Anne Graham Lotz. She has heard the Spirit speak to her about the state of our world today.

In her words, “He has impressed on me that we are living at the end of human history as we know it…. In obedience, I am blowing the trumpet … sounding the alarm … issuing a national prayer initiative entitled7 7 7: An Urgent Call to Prayer. The Call is for God’s people to pray for each of the first seven days in the seventh month: July 1–7. Then on the 7th day, July 7, we are to pray and fast for 7 hours.”

The purpose:

  • For God the Father to restrain, protect, and deliver His people from the evil that has come into our world
  • For God the Son to be exalted, magnified, and glorified in His church, in our nation, and in our lives
  • For God the Holy Spirit to fall on us in a fresh way, compelling the church to repent of sin and our nation to return to faith in the living God, resulting in a great national spiritual awakening

One of the reasons: the Reformed Church in America’s wavering approach to same-sex marriages. The URC believes marriage is limited to a man and a woman. But denominations toeing the line on traditional marriage face a new problem: the growing number of pastors performing same-sex ceremonies despite rules and the ambivalent responses from denominational leadership.According to URC pastor Kevin DeYoung, his congregation has wrestled for three years with the decision to leave the RCA. The RCA has been debating sexual ethics for much longer. Since the late 1970s, the denomination has been affirming that marriage is between a man and a woman. In 2005, the General Synod took action against a pastor who performed a wedding ceremony for his daughter and her partner, deposing him as a Professor of Theology and suspending him as a Minister of Word and Sacrament.

And in 2012, the General Synod approved their strongest statement yet in favor of traditional marriage, calling homosexual behavior “a sin according to the Holy Scriptures” and making performing same-sex marriages “a disciplinable offense.”

But those actions were short-lived. The pastor was reinstated by his classis in 2011, and the 2012 statement was softened by the 2013 Synod, which left the language calling homosexual behavior sinful but acknowledged that they had “usurped the constitutional authority reserved for the classes.”

And when asked to repeal the ordination of RCA’s first openly gay clergy, the 2013 Synod passed the case back to the regional synod, which has since upheld the 2011 ordination.

“Statements from the General Synod should have some weight to them, especially if they’re stated over and over again,” DeYoung said. “But that’s not been the way they’ve been handled. Now it’s clear that there’s no teeth to them or authority behind them. Individual classes will do what they want to do.”

Familiar Situation

It’s a situation that sounds familiar to Bill Arnold, professor at Asbury Theological Seminary and lifelong member of the United Methodist Church (UMC).

The 2012 UMC General Conference held that same-sex practices are incompatible with Christian teaching. The United Methodist position has remained unchanged since 1972. What has changed is the behavior of pastors and bishops, Arnold said. Pastors are conducting homosexual weddings, and bishops have begun to refuse to bring them to trial, he said.

“Essentially we have different factions in the church living out their convictions in ways that result in miniature denominations,” he said. “It’s a fragmentation of our church.”

And with the General Conference meeting only every four years, there’s no mechanism to deal with crises that arise in the meantime, he said.

“We essentially deteriorate into a screaming match,” Arnold said. “My friend says we’re more like a bad Jerry Springer act than a church.”

The conflict has been amplified by the rapidly changing opinions of the American public. In 2001, 57 percent of Americans opposed same-sex marriage and 35 percent were in favor, according to Pew Research Center. Twelve years later, 43 percent were opposed and 50 percent were in favor.

And while white evangelical Protestants are most likely to oppose gay marriage—only 23 percent approved in 2013—that figure has risen 10 percentage points from the 13 percent that favored same-sex marriage in 2001.

Same Limbo

Though different in structure from American denominations, the Church of England is also in limbo over the same subject, said Rod Thomas, vicar of St. Matthew’s Church in southern England.

California’s Assembly Bill 1266 For Transgender Student Rights Signed By Governor Jerry Brown

california transgender students bill
California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a groundbreaking bill which will allow transgender youth to use whatever bathroom and participate on whichever sports team they believe matches their gender identity.

As the Associated Press reported last month, California’s Assembly Bill 1266 gives students in public K-12 schools the right “to participate in sex-segregated programs, activities and facilities” based on their self-perception, regardless of their birth gender. Although Massachusetts, Connecticut, Washington and Colorado have adopted policies designed to protect transgender students, California becomes the first state to address the issue with a statewide law, Fox News pointed out.

News of Brown’s Aug. 12 signing was confirmed in an email to HuffPost Gay Voices from Mark Snyder of the Transgender Law Center.

Scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2014, AB1266 was authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and passed the California State Senate and Assembly earlier this summer, according to San Diego Gay and Lesbian News.

Meanwhile, Brown’s move quickly drew praise from the state’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Obama: I “Wont Give Any Ground” Defending Unlimited Abortion

by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 8/3/12

President Barack Obama made it clear, yet again, that he will not yield when it comes to promote and supporting abortion on demand for any reason throughout pregnancy.

Appearing at a conference of liberal bloggers in New York City, Obama pledged “not to give any ground” when it comes to the issue of abortion.

“Millions of young women have coverage through their parents’ plans. They are beginning to gain access to contraception at no additional cost. I’m not going to give any ground to those who would deny women their own health care choices,” he told the liberal bloggers at the Blog Her event. “Women should have control over decisions that affect your health, your lives, your careers.”

According to a Washington Times report, Obama “then pivoted to a completely political plea, arguing that women who share his beliefs about their control over their health care needs and their lives couldn’t face a bigger choice this election.”

The comments from Obama came on the same day he met with officials from Planned Parenthood, the nation’s biggest abortion business, immediately after exiting Air Force One today at a campaign stop in Florida.

The Hill carried more informationon the meeting:

The two women, Jenna Cawley Tosh and Nancy Wolf, were part of a group that greeted Obama on the tarmac as he stepped off Air Force One.  Obama “spent time talking with each” before moving on to work a rope line, according to a White House pool report. Tosh and Wolf are President/CEO and Board Chairwoman of Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando, respectively.

Are You Praying for Revival?

Since finishing Iain Murray’s superb biography of Martyn Lloyd-Jones last week, I’ve been pondering the topic of revival. The life and ministry of the Welsh pastor leaves me no option. As Murray, who also authored Revival and Revivalism, observes: “True zeal for revival is nothing other than zeal for the glory of God in the conversion of many.” Or, as Tim Keller explained at TGC13, revivals are “seasons in which the ordinary operations of the Holy Spirit are intensified.” (For more on gospel revival, see chapters 4 and 6 in Center Church or A God-Sized Vision: Revival Stories That Stretch and Stir by Collin Hansen and John Woodbridge.)

While such statements may sound harmless enough, are they true? Some evangelicals today are certainly uneasy with revival talk. Revival is God’s concern, they insist, not ours. Are they wrong?

TGC Council members Kevin DeYoung, Bryan Chapell, and Richard Phillips recently sat down to tackle this knotty topic. “In a true revival, you’re not adding human manipulative techniques to a biblical ministry,” Phillips explains. Rather, you’re “doing biblical ministry, fortified by prayer, and the Holy Spirit is giving you a great harvest.”

Moreover, Chapell points out, “True revival is often very disruptive to the traditional church.” As a result, many churches “want revival until it comes.” On the other hand, DeYoung adds, some don’t desire to see revival unless it occurs in their church.

To be sure, the history of revivalism is shot through with examples of well-meaning people seeking to engineer what only God can do. As Lloyd-Jones warned:

Pray for revival? Yes, go on, but do not try to create it, do not attempt to produce it; it is only given by Christ himself. The last church to be visited by a revival is the church trying to make it

Bishop I. V. Hilliard of New Light Christian Center in Houston Texas, needs to upgrade his chopper blades.

A Texas megachurch pastor, whose ‘Aviation Department’ advised him that upgrading the blades on his helicopter would save his church $50,000, recently caused an uproar for asking his congregation to help finance the upgrade with $52 ‘favor seeds.’

Bishop, I.V. Hilliard, of the New Light Christian Center in Houston Texas, reportedly sent out acontroversial newsletter to his “Friends in Jesus” list, telling them that if they sow a $52 transportation seed toward the upgrade they would receive “breakthrough favor” within 52 days or 52 weeks.

“Does your car need repair or total replacement? Do you have a dream vehicle or luxury automobile you long to purchase?” noted Hilliard in the opening paragraph of the letter.

“Our Aviation Department has an opportunity that will save the ministry well over $50K if we will move on it right away. My Aviation Manager stated that while repairing our helicopter they discovered that if we upgrade our blades today, it will save thousands in the days to come,” he explained.

Then while pointing to various biblical scriptures, Hilliard noted: “We have an urgent transportation need that the Lord said can be an opportunity for you to see His favor and His wisdom released to help you.”

“Scripture teaches when you give to a Kingdom need, God will raise up someone to use their power, their ability and their influence to help you,” he added.

“As I pondered and looked at the situation, I heard that still small voice of the Holy Spirit say ‘tell your special partners who have special transportation needs’ and their obedience will release favor for their needs and desires. I got excited and set down to write you!” noted Hilliard.

The Bishop’s request however stirred a heated debate online as soon as it was made public.

“You sir, are proof that SUCKERS/SHEEPLE are born every day! Give that charlatan money $$? LOL Why? So he can buy more gold rings, bigger mansion, bigger cars, hire another maid, a Helicopter??? ? All under the guise of Gawd..LOL This atheist is glad he’s an atheist!” wrote John R Costello on the Bishop’s facebook page.

Apparently upset that some people think Hilliard’s request is unreasonable, Pastor Eddie Daniels responded supportively to the controversy on the Bishop’s facebook page.

Words said without heart are as utterly useless to our souls as the drum beating of savages before their idols! Where there is no heart, there may be lip-work and tongue-work, but there is no prayer. Saul, I have no doubt, said many a long prayer before the Lord met him on the way to Damascus. But it was not until his heart was broken that the Lord said, “He prayeth.”

Kermit Gosnell

Abortionist sentenced to life in prison

Chris Woodward,Charlie Butts   (OneNewsNow.com) Tuesday, May 14, 2013

PHILADELPHIA (Associated Press – May 14, 2013) – Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist who was convicted of killing three babies who were born alive, has agreed to give up his right to an appeal and will be spared a potential death sentence.

Gosnell was convicted Monday of first-degree murder in the deaths of the babies who were delivered alive and killed with scissors. The 72-year-old Gosnell gave up his appeal rights Tuesday, and prosecutors agreed to two life sentences without parole.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty because Gosnell killed more than one person, and his victims were especially vulnerable given their age. But Gosnell’s advanced age had made it unlikely he would ever be executed before his appeals ran out.

Gosnell is to be sentenced Wednesday in the death of the third baby, an involuntary manslaughter conviction in the death of a patient and hundreds of lesser counts.

Original story …

The truth of abortion … the hope for Gosnell’s repentance

A conviction in the murder trial of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell has boosted the efforts of pro-lifers to demonstrate what abortion really is.

The 72-year-old Gosnell, who operated a filthy abortion clinic on Philadelphia’s west side, was found guilty Monday of killing three babies born alive during late-term abortions and causing the death of an abortion patient. The jury is to return later this month to determine punishment for the former abortionist.

A life sentence, says Newman, is Gosnell’s only hope for repenting and coming to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.Gosnell faces a possible death penalty for his crimes, but Troy Newman ofOperation Rescue is hopeful that Gosnell will receive life in prison. “I want to see people be given the opportunity to repent,” he says. “I like the idea of extending grace even in the midst of judgment like God does in our lives – then [Gosnell] can spend the rest of his days in an isolated cell contemplating what he’s done.”

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama called Jason Collins on Monday to express his gratitude after the NBA playerpublicly announced that he is gay, two sources familiar with the call told The Huffington Post.

A White House official confirmed the call, saying that the president wanted to “express his support” and tell Collins that “he was impressed by his courage.”

The conversation took place several hours after Sports Illustrated published an essay by Collins in which he came out and explained why he had waited until now to make the announcement.
