Are You Stubborn?

God knows how stubborn I am. It’s not something I’m proud of, either. How much sweeter and more joyful my life could have been—and how much further along the road with God I could be by now—had I surrendered each area of my heart to Christ much sooner!

I’ve encountered a number of points where I had to choose between my way and God’s way. There was the surrender to honor and obey my parents as a rebellious teenager, when I finally chose to place myself under their authority regardless of what I thought was best.

There was the surrender to confess a certain sin struggle and bring it into the light so I could walk in victory and freedom. There was the surrender to wait on the Lord and trust His plan for my life, even if it meant living in my hometown (even under my parents’ roof!) for the rest of my life.

There was the surrender to missions work, if that’s where God wanted me (the last thing I wanted to do at the time). And finally, just recently, there has been the surrender of the big dreams I had in mind for the future—to be “great” for God—in order to accept a different mission from the Lord.

Jesus said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:24-25).

As we pray for spiritual awakening, is there any stubbornness still residing in our hearts? Any areas where we are holding back from absolute surrender to Jesus?
